MATTHEW AFFECT
“BLOG POST: SYNTHESIS”
Daily question: I do think that people have advantages when it comes to activities. They might have more advantages than others, because they might be better trained than others, or better than others. Like for example the team captain in some kind of sport can have, or may have more advantages of the team, because they are better than everybody and they can have those advantages because they are more advanced and trained. They could have also just been good at that activity since the beginning they started that sport. Gladwells opinion of the daily question was that if you were born around the same month of the sport that was happening at that time, was that you were meant for that sport. Yes, he does think that other people do have advantages, because when he was looking in the birthdays, he found out that here were other people with different birthday months other than January and February. Those advantages were that if you were the oldest one in the group you had the most advantages. I do agree with him, because if you are older you can do more things. No this chapter didn’t make want to change my daily question response. He used were the hockey playing, and mentally and physically sports. No they were not convincing to me because it didn't explain enough information.

I had a huge advantage as a child because my uncle was a very good musician along with being able to read music and teach music really well. It was also very inspiring because he encouraged music on his family that I was the only one whoever picked up on it. I believe there are several advantages in the competitive spectrum. Either he music and sports you will find many advantages such as talent ability both physical. I found it so interesting about how the window for eligibility and sports is so small when it comes to date of birth. And the way that you the United States against Canada and Europe is so different when it comes to athletic eligibility in terms of talent. Gladwell's ideas expressed in the beginning of outliers talks very much about how after athletic is so different and both spectrums. You look at the statistics between Canada and American hockey there much difference Canada is crazed with hockey fans US it's more about football and baseball and basketball and we do not give hockey the credit it deserves so we allow Canada to be the experts on that and if Gladwell decides the Canada is more accurate than I think we should except that. I think that advantages come with every human being but it's just different advantages.
The Matthew Effect
People who attend practices have an advantage over other
players. The data I have is that people who actually practice and don’t slack
off usually have a better advantage than the player that slacks off and blows
off all of the practices. In “The Matthew Effect” they say that people who are
born around the same time as the cutoff for the sport my response is not
related to the one that is used in the book.
Gladwell’s response to the daily question would be that it depends on
when your birthday is that gives you the advantage. Those examples would be
what is going on around the time you were born that might give you the
advantage. No I don’t agree with him because it really depends on what you are
interested in and how far you take this does not make me rethink my daily
question. Some source he used are charts of the player’s information. Yes they
were convincing because a lot of the players birthdays were around the same
time as the cutoff for that sport.

He probably agrees
with it because in his book he keeps on saying that all the older kids have an advantage.
He says that the kids are older and more mature than other kids and that is why
they are so good. Yes I do because if I got in a fight with a kid my same exact
size but I am more mature so I would win. No because I agreed with him. He used
the team roster to show everybody the kids ages and their birthdays were in January.

I think some people do have advantages. For example, if you
have more experience than you’re going to have greater chance at succeeding. Like
if Lebron James plays Conan one on one Lebron would obviously win because he
has more experience, but if Conan challenged LeBron to a funny contest Conan
would win because he has more experience. Experience doesn't have to physical
it can be mental, sources who are older and have more wisdom will probably be wittier. Gladwell
does think some players have an advantage because into in the passage he
explains the cutoff date for sports and how some players are months older then others
also which, have matured more. These players that are born right at the cutoff
date are stronger, faster, more experienced than all the younger players. 12
months of growing makes a huge difference. I agree with him because people who
are older obviously will have a closer chance at winning. These sources were
convincing because all the championship teams were born at the same period near
the cutoff date.

Daily Question:
In school I ran for judge for Ameritowne. I do believe some
people have advantages over other people because in this competition they had
to have good public speaking for the speeches we had to do and they had to have
crowd appeal so they were popular and people knew who they were and liked them.
My claim is that the more popular people will win the school competitions
because people like them and people know who they are. My evidence is that in
that school competition Adam Koskovich won because his personality was funny
and he had good stage presence. Also for Homecoming it is a popularity race
more than a good person race. People all know the popular kids and are more
likely to vote for them because they know who they are.
In the “Matthew
Effect” Gladwell’s opinion would have been that other people do have advantages
based on simple things like when they were born that they can’t even control.
Also he would have said that people have to work at something to get it because
a poor person can’t just suddenly be rich they have to work at it to get there.
Specifically, Hockey players that are born in January have a better chance of
getting into the higher leagues because they or older and more mature. I agree
with him because the more mature and coordinated you are the better chance you
have of being selected.
This chapter
sort of made me rethink it in the way that just based on the month you were
born you can already have an advantage. He used a lot of chart to help us see
the rosters and how all the players have a lot of key things in common. These
were some convincing sources because they were real charts.
Daily question
By: Mikayla Bagley
I do
swimming as a sport. When I was in seventh grade I would always go to the pool
and just swim until it was time to go. I was never really on a swim team until I
came to CT. my first day was horrible because I wasn’t ready. The other girls
had lots of experience because they were on teams already and knew everything
needed to know. While me on the other hand only had about 4 months’ worth of practice.
I almost quit because I didn’t think I would ever improve and I thought I would
always be the youngest that everyone was mean too or had to watch out for and
make sure to not be my swimming partner. I tried really hard to improve. It must
have worked because now I can move as fast as them, maybe even faster. So I definitely
think there are advantages for some people. As in having more experience or
more practice time than others.
Some hockey
students are older than others which is an advantage for having more time
practicing or having more time to learn than the younger hockey players. Which relates
to my daily question because in both it is basically saying that others had more
practice then the other people playing the sports.
Advantages: Synthesis Assignment
Some people
many have an advantage of being natural athletic. You may be naturally build
for a certain sport, someone may be tall and strong so they would be built to
play basketball. Another advantage would be the support system that an individual
or team has. If you’re supported strongly you will think positive about the
direction you’re headed in and you’ll have people to push you to reaching your
goal. It’s the opposite for a bad support system.
Gladwell’s opinion
to the daily question would be yes, people have advantages to a sport or
activity that is played. The advantages that is used in this type of situation
would be the cut-off for the age differences. If you’re at the cut-off of being
too young for one age group you have the advantage of being older for another
age group, when your older you are stronger and will be better.
I agree with
Gladwell, those people who make the cut-off are more fortunate because they
will be playing against others who are younger then themselves. I am in the
same situation for soccer and this odp team. I’m at the cutoff where I am
younger than most girls, and it was harder for me to make the team because half
the girls on my team and older for the odp team.
Dustin's synthesis assignment
1) 1) I believe that people do have advantages in sports, education, activities (etc.). this is shown by Usain Bolt because his is the world record holder for the men's 100m dash. The reason why is he trained endlessly in that event his whole life to become a professional track star.
2)
Gladwell believes that when you were born determines whether or not you have an advantage in a sport or not. This is because the cutoff date to a sport, activity, or academic purpose because if you are older you will have an advantage in hockey, school, and baseball. Yes he believes that because of the date of birth/ cutoff day. I agree with this because it is a true statement. He used the NHL roster to determine that most players were born in January-March.
Roseto Mystery
A community is a group of people that live together of are connected in some way such as the CT community because we all help each other out here and we all are connected by going to this school. I believe that the rich should help the less fortunate because it is a way at giving back to the community or the less fortunate. The rich shouldn’t be greedy or rude to the less fortunate because they deserve respect even though they are less fortunate, they are still human beings. The rich should always help people because the less fortunate could have given them the respect and the help to become rich. The rich have so much already, why be greedy and rude with your wealth? Why can’t they give back?
An outlier is someone or something that is extraordinary or that puzzles the normal person. Roseto is considered an outlier because the community is so connected and healthy that Wolf does not have an answer on why the Italians of Roseto are so healthy and not dying of any type of heart related illness. After reading this, my view hasn’t really changed because I was pretty much correct on what a community is, a group (big or small) of people that live together or are connected in some way.
Blog post 2: Synthesis
I think that
when it comes to having advantages I think that some people have advantages and
some people don’t. I think in the cases that people do have advantages that it
is because they practice because they are trying achieve a goal or because they
love the sport or activity that they are involved in. But in some cases it
could also be just plain and simple that they were born with the talent or that
it is in their genes to be good at the sport or activity. But I think some
people do have disadvantages because some people are not able to just be good
at a sport or activity. They have to work 10 times as hard just to be a fraction
of how good the other people are. I don’t think that the people who are better
or have more of an idea or perspective should be downgraded, I just don’t think
that they should be given special treatment for the way that they are. And in
some cases people are given more opportunities at one time because they rise
above others without receiving a full evaluation. I think that Gladwell’s
opinion would be more or less the same. I just think that he would say that
there would be more of an explanation to why people are able to achieve the
goals that they are able to exceed.

I do participate in something competitive, I play CT girls basketball. I do believe that people have certain advantages in this sport. The players that are considered to have the advantages in my opinion are the players that are, bigger or taller, faster, stronger, that have a good memory, and how much practice or skill they have. These advantages can either help you while you play or practice, and they can help you reach the WNBA or the NBA if you are that good at it and if you have these advantages in the game. Gladwell’s opinion on this would be similar because he does think that certain people have an advantage in certain things. He believes that in hockey, the player born in January will be able to be coached better, and will be able to reach the top because they will be the more advanced players of their league causing them to reach the big leagues of hockey. It is the same with baseball. All the players born in the month of September rather than any other month will be better at baseball because they will be more mature and trained in the sport. I do believe that these sources are convincing because Gladwell is right because the player of child born in the month of the cutoff date of an academic or sport, the child will most likely do better than a player or child born in a month later than a cutoff date of an academic or sport.

I think certain people do have advantages when it comes to
something competitive. I think that because, some people practice more than
others or they have a God given gift that helps them to be more of an advantage.
Also, some people have played a specific activity longer than others. Comparing
to the Outliers Gladwell’s opinion was that certain people have advantages. For
example, in the book he said that if you were older in a class you would more likely
know more than other students who are younger. Or if you play a sport longer
you are going to be better at sport than someone who has played that sport for
a shorter time. I do agree with him because, I think if you are more
experienced or if you are talented in an activity or if you are older and
stronger you are going to be better at an activity. For example, in soccer
there is recreational teams and there are competitive teams. A competitive team
is more experienced and better. While a recreational team are players just
starting out and are not at that competitive level.

An
advantage that some people have in football is when a person is taller because
when people in football are taller they can catch the football over the guy’s
head or maybe they can run though people because they are so big that people
might just be afraid to go and make the tackle so people that are bigger in
football can have many advantages in football or multiple reasons.
He
believes that certain people have advantages over other people because some of
the kids in the hockey league were older had an advantage maybe the hockey
players since they were older were bigger just like in football what I was talking
about how they could be older and bigger and have an advantage because people become
afraid and not want to come after them.
I
do agree in some ways maybe if they are older they have more experience and
they could be bigger causing kids to do things such as be scared or maybe make
the other player to avoid hitting them or making contact because they believe
that they could physically hurt them but also maybe a kid or younger kid has
more experience could be better and know the weak spot of the bigger or more
talented player and could take an advantage of that and become ultimate player
in the game.

Question Answer-Something “goal-oriented” I’ve done is dance, and upping a
level. Some people have advantages to being better at dancing. Like having
years of experience or it could be something like having natural flexibility,
whether genetically or “God-given.” For example, one may go further and higher
into a leap if they have their splits/extended splits. Because then, they can
spread their legs apart further when they go into their leap. This reflects on
what we read in “The Matthew Effect” By having advantages. For example, most of
the guys on hockey teams are born in January, February, or March because they
are older, more mature, and experienced then the kids 10 months younger than
them. I agree with him because, if someone is older, and have been put through
more difficult classes/levels so that overall, they have more experience than
the younger kids in that same level. Some of Gladwells convincing sources are
how it isn’t only hockey that has this age difference dilemma. It is also
sports such as soccer!
Daily Question #2:
In my previous Elementary School I used to play a bit of
recreational volleyball. Many of my team members played more than just a bit
better than I. I couldn’t for the life of me get that ball over the damn net
while serving; that wasn’t exactly a point of weakness per-say for the other
girls on my so called “team.” I always seemed to lose potentially winning
points during our weekend games at a nearby rec. center- hence the reason
nobody talked to me; even during practice.
I figured they would all be better off without me, so eventually I quit.
Soon after that I got some rather depressing news. My step father had informed
me that for the first time my former team had finally won their first game. I
suppose with me out of the picture that outcome was inevitable, I suppose after
all I’m rather proud of their well deserved success.
The Matthew Effect
When it comes to playing any sport, I believe
some people do have advantages over others. Those people might have the god
given talent while playing. They might also have the genetics or capability to
understand the sport faster than others. Gladwell’s opinion is that some people
have advantages over others when it comes to age difference and the maturity
level an individual has that sets them as an outlier. I do agree with his
opinion because many people are compared differently from each other by age
group or capability. The Matthew effect chapter did make me rethink my answer
to the daily question by giving me examples. Some of the sources Gladwell used
to make his points were charts comparing the age group year the athlete was
born and etc for each sport he gave.
Synthesis
Some people have advances by sports because they are more
ready than other people. Some people who play one sport more than others have
an advances. Then someone who just started a sport. Sometimes when people play
sports they can be ready mentally and physically ready. That’s kind of how
people can have advances. Galdwell opinion about the daily question is that
when people are born around the same year or month that they are ready for sports.
Yes, he does think that other people have advances because when he looked at different
sports he found that more people have birthdays. When people are older they are
ready to do other things. Un-like when people are younger and aren't ready. In
the book he talks about how in hockey most of the players are born in the
months February, January and March. He goes on saying that most of them were ready
to start the sport physically and mentally. That’s how he explained his opinion
on the daily question.
Advantages in contests
Advantages
can be present in many places, one place per say could be a video game contest.
You could have the advantage of having better hand-eye coordination compared to
other people making your reaction time much faster. Being able to be faster in
this instance with reaction time makes you have much of an advantage. You could
be able to react about someone coming around the corner before they are even
able to take 1 step away from the turn. Being able to have a faster reaction
time isn't all hand-eye coordination, the advantage to it could also literally
just be the time you have of reacting to things with your neurons sending
things to your brain for you to be able to press the trigger to fire at them. The
age factor in this could matter A LOT because if someone were to be 30 they
would have a slower reaction time because their mind isn't able to process
things as fast as per say a 15 year old mind because 15 year old have such a
fresh mind they can process things much faster based on their minds being able
to learn things and adapt faster than the mind of a 30 year old. The gap of a 1
year difference between people wouldn't matter much I wouldn't think, the
matter of practice could make the difference and being able to know what some
people would do by watching them and learning but everyone also has a different
play style so you cannot always know. The way Gladwell explains the advantages
of some people does not apply to my area of field entirely it can in some ways.
Gladwell would take my response into consideration but he would be able to find
some way to connect it to his and be able to make it seem more logical for the
age of not even a year for this to happen could be of dire significance. I
would agree with him once he would prove all the facts to me and show me
exactly how it would connect. This chapter of the book made me re think on my
advantages because I forgot of how much age could affect the coordination of
yourself along with just the reaction time of the body.
Roseto Mystery
A community is
when people have common interests living in a particular area. I am part of the
crosswind church community I guess. No rich people aren’t responsible for
helping the poor because they made all that money on their own. But I do think that
rich people should help out the less fortunate.
According to Malcolm
Gladwell an outlier is something that is situated away from or classed
differently from a main or related body. Roseto is an outlier because it is a
place that lay outside everyday experience, where the normal rules don’t apply.
It doesn’t change any of the ideas that I had from the daily question. To make
a thriving community everybody needs to spend time with each other just like
all the people that lived in Roseto.

Roseto Mystery
A community is a group or a society that is bonded together because of similar interests or beliefs. An example of a community it a group of soccer players or a type of church organization. I believe the people who are more fortunate do have any social responsibility to help the less fortunate because in my point of view i think its the right thing to do to help out someone in need.
An outlier is something that is situated away from or is classed differently from a main or related body. Roseto is an outlier by the lifestyle and culture the community lives by and how different it is from other communities. Reading this chapter has changed my ideas in the daily question by giving me a better understanding of what a community is going along with the book. My thoughts on whats makes a thriving community are they need a healthy enviroment, lifestyle.

"ROSETO MYSTERY"
Daily question
In my own words community would be like all the people in
your neighborhood, the people in your church, and your friends and family.
I myself said that the more fortunate people should not help
the less fortunate people. I said that because the more fortunate people work
for their things and they went to college and they went to study something good
with good pay. Then there are the less fortunate people who probably don’t go
and study and don’t want to go to school, because they are lazy or something.
That’s why I said that the more fortunate people shouldn’t help the less
fortunate people.
“The Roseto Mystery”
According to Malcom Gladwell an outlier is a scientific term
to describe things. What makes Roseto an outlier is that they don’t have heart
diseases and are considered healthy, but they eat extremely horrible, smoke and
drink, but what made them healthy was where they were from. This chapter has
changed my ideas by that the more fortunate people should help the less
fortunate people. My thoughts are that a thriving community is the people
around you the people you have been with. Like a town and your family.

Roseto mystery
Daily Question
I believe community is a group of people that all have something in common. They can have the same background, religion, sport, etc. They can also like similar things like movies and books. They can also live in the same area or city to be a community because they have where they live in common. So a community is a group of people that have anything in common because they are connected in that way.
I believe the rich should choose if they want to or not. The rich people earned their money or inherited it and either way they get to choose what they do with their money. Everyone has the same chance of making money and the rich people should decide if they want to give the poor people their money even though the poor people made the wrong choice. Maybe the richer people have an easier route to success but it is still possible for everyone to be successful.
An outlier is something that is detached from the main body or group. Roseto is an outlier because their culture their way of life is different, it is detached from the main body of Pennsylvania because it is outside of everyday experience and normal rules didn't apply there. It has changed my opinion by realizing that a community is a group of people that have something in common and they all come together as a family and talk to each other and love each other is what a community should be. A thriving community is group of people that like each other and spend time together and act as if they were family.

What is a community? A community is a group or gathering of
people in an area. I belong to the
school community also known as CT. I
would say the people here are in the middle class they don’t have a lot of
money, but they aren't poor. An outlier
is a place that is secluded from everything else. Reading this hasn't changed a single thought
about communities. My thoughts on a
thriving community are that as long as people are working from the common good
of the people it should make it thrive.
Roseto Mystery
Community is when you have a lot of different people in a
big group. Rich people should help the less fortunate because it’s the right
thing to do. Also because you will be helping someone that might really need your help and maybe people will see what your doing and try to help someone else in there life. Most people aren't lucky enough to be rich, it’s good
to help other people because they could maybe one day help you too.
According to Malcom Gladwell an outlier is
when someone or something is different than the others. To be different not “normal”.
Roseto is an outlier because they have people living for a really long time and
no one can explain why this is happening. To make a thriving community you need
different kinds of people that can always keep you on your toes. That is what I
think a thriving community is.
I belong to the country music Association with also being with the country's family reunion foundation the save the country music Association and of course the country music Hall of Fame I think the rich people should contribute to the four but not necessarily donate I think that with their own enterprise and how they became rich in the first place there should be no need. I also feel like modern day America is confused between wealthy and Rich I think that if rich people are socially responsible for the poor then they should be taxed more
I think that an outlier is an exception generally I think that Roseto is an exception and an outlier because of their economic/social/health positions. My thinking about what an outlier is has not changed.
I believe that the fortunate do
sometimes have the responsibility of helping the less fortunate. I believe so
because there are people starving in other countries but we are trying to take
action but we are taking the wrong action by making commercials. Commercials
are taking as much money as it would take to be able to feed the whole country
for 4 weeks straight. The fortunate have a lot of responsibility when it comes
to helping others but most don’t do it, they just keep to themselves and hope
for the best.
A outlier to Malcom Gladwell is a scientific term that makes
someone extraordinary or makes people really think about what they do.
Roseto is a outlier by having zero to one medical condtions
meanwhile their surroundings are ridden with things like heart disease and
other things. But most rosetans, Wolf believes, were able to keep in contact
and be able to have such a strong community that there was no crime in the city
nor anything else
This chapter didn’t change my mind on my daily question, if
some people found a way to be able to survive then it is survival to the
fittest.
Making a thriving a community would be such a importiant
thing for countries in need of being in need of food and water, if they find a
way to be able to survive and still keep a smile on their face, along with
being able to talk and cook and just in all around keep a well round life, you
have everything set and going for you.
